Firearms, drugs and stolen property seized in arrest of Grande Prairie man

A Grande Prairie man is facing a number of charges following his arrest while camping on Crown land.

On Saturday, January 9, Beaverlodge RCMP received reports of a suspicious male with a vehicle and trailer camping near Range Road 90 and Township Road 755 in the County of Grande Prairie.

Officers attended the scene, where they discovered the vehicle was reported stolen from La Glace on December 2, and the trailer had been reported stolen from Beaverlodge on December 14.

The man was arrested for possession of stolen property, along with outstanding warrants from both Beaverlodge and Edmonton.

Police searched the vehicle where they discovered and seized a loaded sawed off shotgun, two additional firearms, ammunition, 3.9 grams of suspected methamphetamine, multiple sets of keys, cheques, and gas cards. The man was out on conditions to not possess firearms or ammunition.

Thomas Christopher Burt, a 32-year-old man from Grande Prairie, faces 18 charges related to this incident, including:

  • Possession of a restricted firearm
  • Unauthorized possession of a firearm
  • Careless use of a firearm (x3)
  • Possession of property obtained by crime over $5000 (x2)
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5000
  • Fail to comply with conditions (x2)

Burt was remanded into custody and is due to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on Wednesday, January 13.
