COVID-19 fatalities recorded in City, County of Grande Prairie

Two more deaths linked to COVID-19 have been recorded in the Grande Prairie area, one in the City and one in the County.

The deaths are the twelfth and third, respectively, in those municipalities. They were two of 21 announced by Alberta Health on Thursday, which brings the province’s COVID-19 death toll to 1,389.

The fatalities in the Grande Prairie area were both linked to the outbreak announced at Prairie Lake Supportive Living facility. One was a man in his 50’s that occurred on January 6. The other was a man in his 90s which occurred on January 12. Both cases included comorbidities, according to Alberta Health.

The deaths come as 28 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded in the City of Grande Prairie, along with five recoveries. There are now 187 active cases of COVID-19 in the city as of the end of day Wednesday.

The County, meanwhile, added two new cases and one recovery. There are now 48 active cases there.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day January 13 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 975 cases (187 active, 776 recovered, 12 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 287 cases (48 active, 236 recovered, three deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 235 cases (89 active, 145 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Seven cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 42 cases (three active, 39 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 14 cases (five active, nine recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 95 cases (two active, 83 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 378 cases (159 active, 213 recovered, six deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 145 cases (31 active, 118 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 297 cases (80 active, 217 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 55 cases (one active, 53 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 105 cases (one active, 103 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 190 cases (58 active, 132 recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 70 cases (all recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 506 cases (29 active, 462 recovered, 15 deaths)

There were 967 new cases recorded on Wednesday following 16,219 tests being completed. The provincial positivity rate now sits at approximately 5.8 per cent.

Hospitalizations in the North Zone now sit at 77, with eight of those individuals in an ICU. In Alberta, 806 people are in hospital with 136 of those people in intensive care.

A total of 66,953 doses of vaccine have been administered in the province, an increase of 8,809 on Wednesday.
