COVID-19 fatality recorded in City of Grande Prairie, 23 new cases

The fifteenth death to be linked to COVID-19 has been recorded in the City of Grande Prairie.

Alberta Health says the fatality was a woman in her 90’s, linked to the outbreak at the Prairie Lake Supportive Living facility. The woman died on January 19, and Alberta Health says comorbidities were present.

This becomes the fifth death from COVID-19 to be linked to the facility.

The fatality comes as there were 23 new cases of COVID-19 recorded in the Swan City for January 21. Five recoveries were also recorded, bringing the active load to 195.

The County of Grande Prairie, meantime, added three new cases and two more recoveries. There are now 54 active cases there.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day January 21 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 1,086 cases (195 active, 876 recovered, 15 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 324 cases (54 active, 266 recovered, four deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 272 cases (61 active, 210 recovered, one death)
  • Birch Hills County: Nine cases (two active, seven recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 42 cases (one active, 41 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 15 cases (one active, 14 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 106 cases (12 active, 84 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 431 cases (100 active, 324 recovered, seven deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 161 cases (23 active, 138 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 335 cases (53 active, 282 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 56 cases (55 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 105 cases (one active, 103 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 211 cases (26 active, 185 recovered)
  • County of Northern Lights: 72 cases (two active, 70 recoveries)
  • Mackenzie County: 529 cases (30 active, 484 recovered, 15 deaths)

The province saw an increase of 643 cases of COVID-19 for Thursday following the completion of 13,019 tests. This is a positivity rate of 4.9 per cent.

Recoveries once again outpaced new cases in Alberta on Thursday, bringing the province’s active case total below 10,000 for the first time since November 14. There are now 9,987.

Hospitalizations also decreased on Thursday, dropping below 700 to 691, with 115 of those people in an ICU. In the North Zone, 72 people are hospitalized with COVID-19 with eight of those people in an ICU.

The death at Prairie Lake was one of 12 new deaths reported by Alberta Health on Friday, bringing Alberta’s death toll to 1,512.

Alberta Health also says 97,785 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered as of January 21.
