Active COVID-19 cases continue decline in Grande Prairie

The City of Grande Prairie added seven new cases of COVID-19 for January 28, as there were also 12 recoveries recorded to lower the active case total in the city to 147.

This marks the seventh consecutive day in which active cases have declined in the city, falling from 195 on January 21.

The County of Grande Prairie added no new cases and six recoveries, bringing the active case count there to 39.

Meanwhile, a fatality linked to COVID-19 was recorded in the MD of Greenview on Friday. The death is the second in the municipality, and was a man in his 90s, not linked to an outbreak site.

The death was one of 14 announced in the province on Friday by Alberta Health. A total of 1,620 Albertans have now died from COVID-19 related complications.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day January 28 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 1,150 cases (147 active, 984 recovered, 19 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 341 cases (39 active, 298 recovered, four deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 284 cases (26 active, 256 recovered, two deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: Nine cases (two active, seven recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 44 cases (two active, 42 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 15 cases (one active, 14 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 109 cases (11 active, 88 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 441 cases (40 active, 392 recovered, nine deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 189 cases (29 active, 160 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 352 cases (34 active, 318 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 56 cases (55 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 106 cases (one active, 104 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 214 cases (eight active, 205 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 71 cases (one active, 70 recoveries)
  • Mackenzie County: 553 cases (40 active, 498 recovered, 15 deaths)

On the day where Premier Jason Kenney announced the easing of some public health restrictions starting Feb. 8, Alberta added 543 new cases for January 28, following the completion of 11,591 tests, bringing a positivity rate of 4.5 per cent.

Hospitalizations sit at 594 in Alberta as of the end of day Thursday, with 110 of those individuals in an ICU.

In the North Zone, 70 people are in hospital, nine of whom are in an ICU.
