Trial dates to be set for suspect in case of doctor’s murder

Feb 1, 2021 | 6:20 AM

RED DEER, Alta. – A trial date is to be set today for a man who wants to act as his own lawyer when he is tried in the killing of a family doctor at a medical clinic in central Alberta.

Deng Mabiour (mah-BOOR’) is charged with first-degree murder in the slaying last summer of Dr. Walter Reynolds at the Village Mall Walk-In Clinic in Red Deer.

A judge warned Mabiour about the seriousness of the offence at his last court appearance in December, but Mabiour still insisted he did not want a lawyer.

He has pleaded not guilty.

A University of Calgary law professor says she’s not aware of any other cases this serious in which an accused has defended him or herself.

Lisa Silver expects the judge in the case will make every effort to ensure that Mabiour receives a fair trial.
