Legion ready to re-open for lunch, supper on Monday

Monday will be a big day for restaurant operators as they will be able to re-open for dine-in service for the first time since early December.

The Grande Prairie branch of the Royal Canadian Legion will be among the places re-opening Monday.

It was briefly open in September but had to close again shortly after because of COVID-19.

When the legion was last open it was without a kitchen as an extensive renovation was taking place to replace the old kitchen.

Legion vice-president Frank Skolly says these renovations were much needed.

“Everything is brand new. We totally gutted the kitchen right out and took out our old walk-in cooler, our old walk-in freezer. We now have all gas-fired, brand-new appliances, brand-new ceiling, brand-new floor, brand-new lighting. Other than the utensils, she’s brand-new.”

Skolly says a lot of the original kitchen design was from when the building was renovated in the 1970s and adds it was severely outdated.

“The kitchen layout was designed in 1974 when the building had its last addition put on, but some of the equipment was old enough that (we can’t get) parts from the manufacturer anymore.”

Skolly says the Legion will be safe for everyone once it re-opens.

“There are going to be the standard precautions that you get everywhere. One member of the group has to leave a contact name and number. Only your family cohort is allowed to sit at a table together.”

The Legion will be open for lunch Monday to Friday for eat-in or take out and open for supper on Thursdays and Fridays
