Dawson Creek RCMP investigating extreme cold exposure-related death

Feb 8, 2021 | 6:16 PM

A woman has died in Dawson Creek from what is believed to be exposure to the weekend’s extreme cold weather.

Dawson Creek RCMP say the 68-year-old woman died early Sunday morning after leaving her next-door neighbour’s house at around 1 a.m., where RCMP note she had been consuming alcohol.

Police say through their investigation, it appears the victim planned to walk home but collapsed in the cold. She was found deceased the next morning by her neighbour and emergency services were called at that time.

The RCMP continue to investigate the incident alongside the BC Coroner’s Service.

“While a tragic event, it is a reminder that extreme temperatures can be dangerous and a threat to life only minutes after exposure,” said the Dawson Creek RCMP, in a release.

“If required to travel, always pack a bag of clothes or wear layers and avoid traveling alone. If you cannot avoid traveling alone, have a “buddy” who knows your travel plans and estimated time of arrival, someone that can check up on you if you don’t arrive when you’re supposed to.”

Anyone with information about this incident that could assist the investigation is asked to call the Dawson Creek Detachment at 250-784-3700.
