Grande Prairie adds 24 new COVID-19 cases, 10 recoveries

The City of Grande Prairie added 24 new cases of COVID-19 for Tuesday while also adding 10 more recoveries. This brings the city’s active case total up to 167 as of the end of day February 9.

There was one new case recorded in the County of Grande Prairie for Tuesday as well as one recovery, holding the active caseload there at 36.

These new cases are a part of the 339 discovered on Tuesday in Alberta, following the completion of approximately 10,800 tests. The province’s positivity rate sits at about 3.2 per cent.

Dr. Deena Hinshaw, Alberta’s chief medical officer of health, said 16 more cases of the variant strain of COVID-19 first detected in the United Kingdom have been recorded in Alberta.

There have now been 113 cases confirmed to be the UK variant strain in Alberta, none of which have been confirmed in the North Zone. The province is monitoring such variants, as they have been found to be more infectious than the current dominant strain.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day February 9 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 1,299 cases (167 active, 1,111 recovered, 21 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 375 cases (36 active, 336 recovered, three deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 311 cases (32 active, 277 recovered, two deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 11 cases (two active, nine recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 45 cases (one active, 44 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 15 cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 109 cases (99 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 458 cases (27 active, 421 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 221 cases (34 active, 187 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 381 cases (32 active, 349 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 56 cases (55 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 106 cases (105 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 225 cases (14 active, 210 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 75 cases (four active, 71 recoveries)
  • Mackenzie County: 586 cases (40 active, 531 recovered, 15 deaths)

Hospitalizations across Alberta dropped by six to 421 as of Tuesday night. Of those admitted to hospital with COVID-19, 77 are in intensive care.

In the North Zone, 53 people are in hospital, six of whom are in an ICU.

Six more deaths linked to COVID-19 were announced by Alberta Health on Wednesday, bringing the province’s death toll to 1,728.

The province has now administered 129,452 doses of vaccine. Dr. Hinshaw says about 37,000 Albertans have now been fully vaccinated with two doses, including 71 per cent of Albertans living in long-term care and designated supportive living facilities.
