Preliminary data shows Alberta’s suicide rates declined in 2020
The Centre for Suicide Prevention says updated figures from Alberta Vital Statistics shows 14 suicide deaths in Grande Prairie in 2020. That figure is up from 2019, when there were 13 suicides recorded in the Swan City, but still below the 17 suicide deaths recorded in the City in 2018.
Preliminary data from medical examiners in Alberta shows there were fewer suicide deaths in the province in 2020 than in the past nine years.
The data shows 468 Albertans took their own lives in 2020, which translates to a ratio of 10.6 suicides per 100,000 people. That rate is much lower than years past as there were 601 suicides in 2019 (which translates to a ratio of 13.8); 630 (14.7) in 2018; 647 (15.3) in 2018; 609 (14.5) in 2016; 668 (16.1) in 2016; 547 (13.4) in 2014; 537 (13.5) in 2013; and 505 (13.0) in 2012.
The data shows that men are over three times more likely to die by suicide, with the 2020 numbers showing 367 men took their lives versus 101 women over the course of the year. However, the ratio of suicide attempts is the opposite, with women attempting suicide five times more than men.
