Grande Prairie man the first to enter bid for Mayoral race

Feb 17, 2021 | 7:03 AM

A desire for change at City Hall has led a Grande Prairie man to enter the race for Mayor in this fall’s municipal election.

Bryan Petryshyn says he has been looking at running for a dozen years.

“I’d like to see more transparency with finances in the city, like to see where the money is being spent. I know a point I’d like to address is talking to a lot of people, they want to see an extended transit system so that it gives the opportunity for people to work a different or a longer shift.”

Petryshyn says he would also like to see the city find ways to generate income besides property taxes and would like to find solutions for low-income housing. He adds a number of older people who walk in Muskoseepi Park would like to see a small patrol, so they feel safer.

He adds he would like to see more of what he calls an “in-depth repair” on city roads.

“Instead of the spring patch that they usually do. If you’ve got to take out a small strip of asphalt instead of just filling a random pothole, it makes a better repair. But it also comes down to if the money is in the budget to do an in-depth repair.”

Petryshyn says snow removal would have to be looked at to see if there are better ways it can be organized.

He says one thing he would like to see is more communication between bylaw officers and the RCMP.

“If they have an issue with like high transit violations or with a stolen vehicle, and then hit and run and then abandonment after, instead of having three separate files, if it’s all the same vehicle, you just amalgamate all the files together.”

Petryshyn currently works at Expert Mobile Communications. He is the first candidate to declare that he is running for Mayor of Grande Prairie.

Municipal elections will be held around Alberta on October 18.
