Public feedback sought on new activity and reception centre in Smith neighbourhood

Community input is being sought as the start of construction of the new activity and reception centre in the Smith neighbourhood draws closer.

The city has posted a survey on its engagement website, which is open until March 3, 2021, which seeks the public’s thoughts on items like what activities and programs are needed at the facility, what the hours of operation should be, among other topics.

The new $4 million centre, 80 per cent of which is being funded through the federal-provincial ICIP-COVID 19 Resilience Stream, is meant to fill many recreational and leisure needs in the community, while also acting as an emergency reception centre in the event of a large-scale disaster, such as wildfires and floods.

“The facility is intended to provide a space for activities that have limited opportunity to play at other venues and fill the gap for youth that want to participate in sports,” says the city, in a release. “In order to accommodate a range of recreation uses and support reception centre needs, the activity space will be constructed with a concrete floor.”

The Request for Proposal for the facility was issued in November of 2020, and the contract has since been awarded to Atkinson Construction Ltd to start construction that is slated to begin in the spring. A caveat attached to the economic stimulus funding means the centre must be fully funded and constructed by the end of 2021.
