Grande Prairie records 22nd death linked to COVID-19

One of 13 COVID-19 deaths reported by Alberta Health Wednesday occurred in the City of Grande Prairie.

Alberta Health says the fatality was a female in her 70s which occurred on February 22 and is linked to the outbreak at Prairie Lake Supportive Living. It is the eighth death from COVID-19 at the facility, and the 22nd to occur in the City of Grande Prairie over the past 11 months.

There have now been 1,866 fatalities recorded in Alberta from COVID-19 since March of last year.

The city added 11 new cases of COVID-19 for Tuesday, along with 21 recoveries. Accounting for the fatality as well, that lowers the active case total in the city to 221 as of the end of day February 23.

The County of Grande Prairie added six new cases and five recoveries, raising the active case total there by one to 44.

Alberta-wide there were 430 new cases identified on Tuesday following the completion of 9,467 tests. The provincial positivity rate sits at about 4.6 per cent.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day Feb. 23 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 1,546 cases (221 active, 1,303 recovered, 22 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 427 cases (44 active, 380 recovered, three deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 373 cases (57 active, 313 recovered, three deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 12 cases (one active, 11 recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 47 cases (two active, 45 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 14 cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 110 cases (one active, 99 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 460 cases (11 active, 438 recovered, 11 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 247 cases (28 active, 219 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 419 cases (48 active, 371 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 57 cases (one active, 55 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 106 cases (105 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 236 cases (12 active, 223 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 86 cases (12 active, 74 recoveries)
  • Mackenzie County: 769 cases (184 active, 569 recovered, 16 deaths)

Hospitalizations declined to 307 in Alberta as of Tuesday night, with 56 of those patients in an ICU. In the North Zone, 39 people are in hospital, with four in an ICU.

The province says 186,572 doses of vaccine have now been administered in the province, including 77,354 Albertans who have now received both doses and are fully immunized.

Wednesday is also the first day seniors born in 1946 or earlier are able to book their COVID-19 vaccination appointment.
