Applications being accepted for annual County Roadside Clean-up Program

Applications are now being accepted for the County of Grande Prairie’s annual Roadside Clean-up.

The Roadside Clean-up program is put on by the County of Grande Prairie through Public Works and allows for local non-profit and community groups to raise money.

“It’s a program for non-profits to generate a little bit of revenue for their organization,” said Dale Van Volkingburgh, the Director of Public Works for the County of Grande Prairie.

“We see the likes of skating clubs, volleyball teams to anything you can imagine. They can collect some of their refuse on the side of the road and they get paid by the kilometre on certain locations they work off of.”

Last year, the program saw 30 non-profit groups volunteer and clean-up nearly 260 kilometres of County roadside. They raised over $57,000 for their organizations and collected a total of 7.53 tonnes of garbage.

When filling out an application for the program, every group can choose up to three locations where they would like to pick up garbage. From there, Public Works and the County will plot groups in one of their three preferred spots.

With the program being so popular, Van Volkingburgh encourages organizations to get their applications in soon, in order to be able to grab a spot of land for the cleanup.

“We’ve had some years up to 50-60 groups be involved in it. It’s a very popular revenue stream for non-profits.”

The clean-up will take place from May 1 to May 23.
