Phase 4 of Downtown Rehab. construction to start in May

Construction work on Phase 4 of the Downtown Rehabilitation and Streetscape Project is set to start in May.

This will see above and below ground improvements made along 100 Avenue between 98 and 100 Streets, similar to the work previously done on 100 Avenue west of 100 Street.

Mayor Jackie Clayton says construction is expected to last through September.

“Right now, we’ve already gone through the consultation process of working with the downtown businesses, keeping them up to date. We have our communication and outreach workers that are working on a regular basis with the downtown businesses to keep them up to date of what’s happening and construction is scheduled to start in May.”

Council approved a $14 million borrowing bylaw for this work at Monday’s meeting.

Clayton adds she is excited to see this project come to an end.

“It’s really intensifying the beautiful features of our downtown and making it more navigable in regards to biking, walking, transportation. It’s just been a project that, when it’s completed, will just really continue to beautify our downtown.”

Clayton says this will be part of Grande Prairie’s biggest capital plan the city has had in its history.

“There will be a lot of construction this summer, from the downtown work to road rehabilitation and overlay program to the construction of an activity centre in the Smith subdivision to the construction of a bike park in Crystal Lake to linkages on our trail network. It will be a large construction season.”:

Clayton says the city is pleased it is getting $14 million from the federal and provincial governments that will allow some things to go ahead this year that would not have been done otherwise. This also means the city’s share of the cost of some projects is 20 per cent of the total. She also thinks this is a good chance to create jobs and get people back to work.
