Storm down Drayton Valley 4-2 in season resumption

Mar 14, 2021 | 7:17 AM

For the first time since their season came to a pause on November 21, the Grande Prairie Storm were able to pick up a regular-season victory in the AJHL, defeating the Drayton Valley Thunder 4-2 on Saturday night.

The Storm would be the first team on the board, 7:49 into the first period with Brett Meerman scoring his second goal of the season on the powerplay to put the Storm up 1-0.

In the second frame, the Storm would strike early as Cameron Vassos would pot home his first goal in a Storm uniform, giving the club a 2-0 lead just 1:11 into the second. Cooper Connell and Ty Toews would pick up the assists on the play, which would turn out to be both players’ first points in the AJHL.

Connell wouldn’t have to wait long to get his second point in the AJHL, as he would put his club up 3-0 on the powerplay with under ten minutes remaining in the second.

The third period saw the Storm extend their lead to 4-0, as they would once again strike on the powerplay, courtesy of a Nathanial Bierd goal.

Drayton Valley would add two late goals in the final five minutes from Kabe Bleay and Dylan Price, but it would prove to be too little too late, as the Storm would end up victorious in this one.

The Storm powerplay finished three for five on the night. Goaltender Joe Howe would pick up his first victory of the season, he stopped 30 of 32 shots. The Storm’s record now sits at 3-1-1.

The Storm will wrap up their two-game road trip on Sunday, as they travel to Whitecourt to face the Wolverines at 4:00 p.m. You can catch the action streamed live on HockeyTV.
