Court update: sentence in Desmarais murder, preliminary hearing set in Grande Prairie sexual assault

Mar 16, 2021 | 5:30 AM

Alberta Justice says a life sentence has been handed to one of two people charged after a 2017 murder in Desmarais.

Collin Noskiye was given the sentence March 5 in Peace River court. He will not be eligible for parole for at least 15 years.

Noskiye and Cindy Nanemahoo were charged after Dorium Yellowknee was found dead outside a Desmarais home June 2.

RCMP said at the time it looked like there had been an altercation at another Desmarais home, a different one than the one where Yellowknee was found.

Noskiye was also given a lifetime firearms prohibition.

Preliminary hearing set in sexual assault

Alberta Justice says a preliminary hearing date has been set for the accused in a sexual assault case involving two underage people.

The hearing has been set for December 16 in Grande Prairie court.

The man was charged after a complaint in January about what police termed at the time in a news release “alleged inappropriate contact of a sexual nature between an adult and two minors” at a Grande Prairie home.

The accused is facing two counts each of sexual assault and sexual interference.

A court-ordered publication ban on the identity of claimants and witnesses is in place.

Preliminary hearings are held to determine if there is enough evidence to go to trial.
