Public hearing report on Energie Saguenay project due out by next week

Quebec’s energy minister has until March 25 to make public a report on public hearings into the Energie Saguenay project.

This would see an LNG facility built at the Port of Saguenay. It would use natural gas from the Alberta and B.C. sides of the Peace.

GNL Quebec says in a news release that it realizes there will be opinions both for and against the proposal in the report and promises to make improvements based on its findings.

That release also says one thing that still needs to be worked out is how this project would mesh with the area’s tourism industry, adding discussions are ongoing. GNL also says efforts continue to reduce the plant’s carbon footprint.

The company is also promising to work with shipowners to reduce the noise coming from ships in an effort to protect marine wildlife.

The federal government announced Tuesday (March 16) it had worked out an energy partnership agreement with Germany, meaning the two countries would work together on trade and investment in energy sources like liquefied natural gas and hydrogen.

In a separate news release, GNL quotes the federal Natural Resources Ministry as saying that Germany would be looking to import LNG from Canada as part of phasing out the use of coal.
