Grande Prairie records 17 new COVID-19 cases, 10 recoveries

The active COVID-19 case count for the City of Grande Prairie has increased to 146, as 17 new cases and 10 recoveries were recorded on March 19.

March 20 also marks one year to the day that the first two cases of COVID-19 were announced in the Swan City.

The County of Grande Prairie’s active case count rose by four to 60 as six new cases and two recoveries were confirmed.

There were 556 new cases recorded across Alberta following 9,979 tests, meaning the positivity rate for the day was 5.6 per cent. There are currently 5,618 active cases in Alberta, 735 of which are in the North Zone.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day March 19 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 1,886 cases (146 active, 1,717 recovered, 23 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 552 cases (60 active, 487 recovered, three deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 438 cases (27 active, 408 recovered, three deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 12 cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 49 cases (two active, 47 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 14 cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 112 cases (102 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 467 cases (eight active, 448 recovered, 11 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 256 cases (four active, 252 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 483 cases (19 active, 464 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 59 cases (two active, 56 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 106 cases (105 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 241 cases (three active, 237 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 99 cases (three active, 96 recoveries)
  • Mackenzie County: 1,151 cases (192 active, 940 recovered, 19 deaths)

There were 99 new cases of COVID-19 variants reported in Alberta, all of which are the United Kingdom strain. There have now been 1,417 variant cases reported in the province, including 23 in the North Zone.

Hospitalizations rose by three to 279 on Friday, and 47 of those patients are in Intensive Care Units. There are 26 people in the North Zone in hospital due to COVID-19, three of whom are in intensive care.

Alberta Health reports four people died due to complications with COVID-19, bringing the number of fatalities in the province up to 1,961.

There have now been 452,690 COVID-19 vaccine shots administered in the province, and 93,194 Albertans are now fully immunized with both doses.
