Whistlers campground to reopen in Jasper National Park after two-year renovation

Mar 22, 2021 | 10:55 AM

Parks Canada says Whistlers Campground in Jasper National Park will reopen this summer, after being shuttered for the past two years due to renovations.

Officials say the 781 sites at Whistlers will be available in early June, along with Wapiti and Wabasso campgrounds. Parks Canada says, though, reservations for Whistlers are not available to book at this time and they will provide users as much notice as possible prior to reservation bookings being made available.

Whistlers Campground has been modernized over the past two years, says Parks Canada, including a new registration centre, improved electrical and sanitation services, 18 new washroom and shower facilities and all campsites have been levelled and restored with new picnic tables and fire pits.

“Plus, all roads will be repaved so potholes will be a thing of the past,” add officials, in a release.

Crews also removed many dead and dying trees within the campgrounds in Jasper National Park.

“This work protects campers and campground infrastructure from falling trees and helps to reduce the risk of wildfire in the area,” says Parks Canada. “It is just one of the ways that Parks Canada continues to manage the impact of mountain pine beetles in the forests of Jasper National Park.”

They add they were able to repurpose some of the wood from the felled trees, which will be given to campers for firewood this summer. A campers fire permit and firewood will also be included in registration fees at all campgrounds in the park.

Parks Canada says to check back on their reservation website for the most recent updates.
