Advisory issued for Peace River as ice breakup nears

Mar 30, 2021 | 11:40 AM

Alberta Environment and Parks have issued a river ice advisory ahead of the ice breakup on the Peace River.

As temperatures warm in the region, the breakup of the Peace River ice cover is expected to happen between April 2 and April 4.

Currently, the location of the breakup is 35 kilometers upstream of the Highway 2 bridge.

The Town of Peace River says no ice-related issues regarding the breakup of the river is expected and water levels are expected to drop by 1.5-2.5 metres as the ice cover melts.

In order to prepare in case of a big melting on the river, Pubic Works crews have been pre-filling sandbags that are being prepositioned in the downtown core. The town has also checked to make sure their pumps are in working condition and fully functional.

Any further updates on the river break-up will be made on the Town of Peace River website and social media platforms.

Meanwhile, the town has also provided an update on the Smoky basin. As of now, it remains stalled due to the colder weather. The town will provide updates on the Smoky basin when they get reports of the river breaking up.
