Swan City Rotary Club’s Cash and Camping lottery returns for 2021

Mar 30, 2021 | 1:25 PM

After cancelling last year’s Cash for Camping Lottery due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Swan City Rotary Club is rolling out the lottery once again with the goal of giving away big prizes and supporting local businesses and community groups.

The 21st edition of the Cash and Camping Lottery will see the winner have an option of two grand prizes, each valued at approximately $220,000.

“The first we call the ‘Lake Lover’s Package’. It’s a lake lot with a 40′ park model home placed there, plus a [16’ Tracker Pro Guide Fishing Boat] and $5,000 cash to help set it all up,” said Dave Cook, the Lottery Chair.

“The other package we call the ‘Road Warrior,’ which is a really nice [Jayco Melbourne] 24′ motor home with a [16’ Tracker Pro Guide Fishing Boat].”

Along with the grand prize packages, over $460,000 worth of prizes, including RV’s, boats, stay-cations and more are up for grabs through the Cash and Camping Lottery.

The lottery not only gives people a chance to win some prizes, but will see some proceeds from the lottery go to support these local community groups:

  • GP Catholic Schools Education Foundation
  • GP Public Schools Education Foundation
  • GP Council on Aging – Seniors Outreach and Meals on Wheels
  • Regional EMS Foundation
  • Bezanson Agricultural Society
  • Troyanda Society of Ukrainian Culture & Heritage
  • Grande Prairie Gymnastics Society

Cook says they hope to see similar amounts given to those organizations as they did through the Cars for Christmas campaign, and have even changed the donation model this year in the hopes of raising more money for them.

“Historically we paid a fixed fee, but with [this year’s] Cars for Christmas we decided to go on a percentage basis, so the more that we sell in this lottery, the more that these organizations receive, and it kind of blew away everybody’s expectations in terms of what those organizations received on the percentage basis.”

He adds they learned a lot about hosting this kind of event through the Cars for Christmas campaign, and are bringing forward that experience into this lottery.

“We definitely pushed the online sales, you can order tickets by mail, you can phone. A lot of people took advantage of that, so we made sure that people were aware of that, both in our online and social media promotions, but also on our brochures and everything else we sent out,” says Cook.

“The other thing is we took a lot of precautions to ensure that those organizations that sold tickets on our behalf were kept safe at the kiosk, and we actually received a lot of good feedback on our protocol.”

Also returning this year is the Summer Cash 50/50 and the 10 Days of Summer lottery. The 50/50 will see a winner take home up to $175,000, with the minimum payout set at $70,000. The 10 Days of Summer will see two names draws every day for two weeks, and will offer a total of $68,000 worth of prizes to the 20 lucky winners.

All of the prizes in both the Cash and Camping Lottery and the 10 Days of Summer Lottery come from local retailers.

Along with offering online and over the phone ticket sale options, in-person sales are returning. The Swan City Rotary Club will be setting up a sales centre in the former Hansen Ford Dealership building on 112 street.

Ticket sales will open online on April 1, in-person ticket sales will open on April 8.
