Grande Prairie man charged for unrelated assaults; throwing knife at police

Mar 31, 2021 | 6:22 PM

Authorities in Grande Prairie have charged a 30-year-old man for two alleged unrelated assaults of a woman and 12-year-old boy, which stem from an assault investigation at a home in the Mountview area on Tuesday

Grande Prairie RCMP initially arrived at the home near 94 Street and 112 Avenue just after 12:30 p.m. on Tuesday after reports of an assault. Upon arrival, police say an adult woman with facial and head injuries approached officers saying the suspect was still in the house.

From there, the male suspect exited the house with a large knife in his hands. After he failed to comply with police orders, the suspect threw the knife at one of the responding officers. The officer was then able to take the suspect into custody.

The female victim was transported to hospital with serious but non-life threatening injuries, while the suspect was also taken to hospital with minor injuries.

The officers involved were not physically injured during the incident.

RCMP say they later learned that the man had physically assaulted a 12-year-old boy at a business near the home a short time before he assaulted the woman at the home.

Police say the boy suffered minor injuries, but did not require treatment in hospital.

Authorities say these victims were not known to each other prior to these incidents.

Now, 30-year-old Dallas Ritchie of Grande Prairie faces several charges, including aggravated assault, assault, assaulting a peace officer, break and enter and possession of a weapon dangerous to the public.

Ritchie was remanded into custody to appear in court April 1.

Anyone with further information on these incidents is urged to come forward to Grande Prairie RCMP at 780-830-5700, or anonymously through Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
