Grande Prairie records 24th death from COVID-19 as 42 new cases identified

The 24th death from COVID-19 has been recorded in the City of Grande Prairie, as there were 42 new cases identified in the Swan City for March 30.

The fatality was one of three in the province reported to Alberta Health over the last 24 hours, and was a female in her 60’s which occurred on March 28. Alberta Health says the case included comorbidities.

Alberta has now recorded 1,990 deaths from COVID-19 since the beginning of the pandemic.

The 42 new cases in Grande Prairie for Tuesday come along with eight recoveries. There are now 272 active cases in the city, the highest level of active cases the city has recorded during the pandemic.

The County of Grande Prairie added 19 new cases as well for Tuesday, along with five recoveries. There are now 104 active cases there,.

Alberta as a whole added 871 new cases for March 30, following 13,739 tests being completed. Those tests came with a positivity rate of 6.3 per cent.

Of those new cases, 406 involved variants of concern. Those variants, mainly the variant first identified in the United Kingdom, make up 31.9 per cent of all active cases in the province.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day March 30 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 2,123 cases (272 active, 1,827 recovered, 24 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 649 cases (104 active, 541 recovered, four deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 457 cases (24 active, 430 recovered, three deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 12 cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 51 cases (three active, 48 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 15 cases (one active, 14 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 114 cases (two active, 102 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 478 cases (10 active, 457 recovered, 11 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 262 cases (10 active, 252 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 497 cases (19 active, 478 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 65 cases (seven active, 57 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 106 cases (105 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 246 cases (six active, 239 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 99 cases (one active, 98 recoveries)
  • Mackenzie County: 1,248 cases (110 active, 1,119 recovered, 19 deaths)

Hospitalizations in Alberta remain at 301 as of the end of day March 30, while 63 people are in an ICU. In the North Zone, 27 people are in hospital, five of whom are in intensive care.

There have now been 634,997 doses of vaccine administered in Alberta as of March 30. 101,298 Albertans have been fully immunized.
