Grande Prairie tops 300 active COVID-19 cases as 40 new cases identified

The City of Grande Prairie recorded 40 new cases of COVID-19 and eight recoveries, raising the active case total in the Swan City above 300 for the first time during the pandemic to a total of 304 as of March 31.

The County of Grande Prairie added 12 new cases and no recoveries. There are now 117 active cases there.

Across Alberta there were 875 new cases identified after the completion of 13,610 tests, Those tests had a positivity rate of 6.3 per cent.

There were also 322 new cases involving variants of concern, and now make up nearly 33 per cent of all active cases in Alberta.

In the North Zone there are 219 active cases involving variants of concern, while 30 people have recovered from them.

Though no new public health restrictions are being brought in at this time, Premier Jason Kenney did put out a plea to Albertans to follow the current public health measures in place, like not gathering indoors with anyone outside of your family, to help slow the recent rise in new cases.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day March 31 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 2,163 cases (304 active, 1,835 recovered, 24 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 661 cases (117 active, 540 recovered, four deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 460 cases (27 active, 430 recovered, three deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 12 cases (all recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 51 cases (three active, 48 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 15 cases (one active, 14 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 115 cases (three active, 102 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 480 cases (12 active, 457 recovered, 11 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 262 cases (10 active, 252 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 497 cases (16 active, 481 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 64 cases (six active, 57 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 106 cases (105 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 246 cases (five active, 240 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 99 cases (one active, 98 recoveries)
  • Mackenzie County: 1,252 cases (110 active, 1,122 recovered, 20 deaths)

Hospitalizations dropped to 292 in Alberta as of March 31, with 59 of those people in an ICU. In the North Zone, 31 people are hospitalized with COVID-19, six of whom are in intensive care.

Four more deaths were reported to Alberta Health over the last 24 hours. The provincial death toll now sits at 1,994.

653,010 doses of vaccine have been administered in the province as of Wednesday, with 103,926 people being fully immunized.
