UPDATE: The Peace Wapiti Public School Division says it has been told by the province Clairmont Community School will be moved to outbreak status. Outbreaks are declared at schools that have five or more reported cases and an investigation reveals that the disease could have been acquired or transmitted at the school.

The Division also says in a release sent out Tuesday evening the person with a case at Peace Wapiti Academy was last in the school on March 31. Close contacts will isolate until April 13, 14, or 15 depending on if their close contact with this person was on March 29, 30, or 31. The person that tested positive was part of a group that was already isolating because of close contact with another case.

Twelve COVID-19 cases were confirmed at six Peace Wapiti Public School Division schools over the Easter long weekend.

The first two were reported on Friday, April 2, and involve Clairmont Community School and Peace Wapiti Academy. In both cases, the infected individuals were last in the school on Tuesday, March 30.

On April 3, confirmed cases were reported at Sexsmith Secondary, Clairmont Community School, Peace Wapiti Academy, and Harry Balfour School. The individual in Sexsmith Secondary was last in the school on March 29, the cases involving Clairmont and PWA were both in the school on March 30, while Harry Balfour last saw the infected individual in the school on March 31.

Four more cases were confirmed on April 4, and involve individuals from La Glace School, Sexsmith Secondary, Robert W. Zahara Public School, and Clairmont Community School. The individual identified at La Glace was last in the school on March 29, while the three others last attended their respected schools on March 30.

Then on April 5, confirmed cases were identified at Robert W. Zahara and at Clairmont Community School. Both of those individuals were last in the schools on March 30.

The PWPSD says letters were sent out to families as soon as the cases were confirmed, and work began to identify close contacts and notify them of potential spread.

The schools have all since been cleaned and sanitized.

Alberta Health Services has either already contacted potential contacts or is in the process of doing so, and instructing those individuals to get tested and to isolate.

The identities of the infected individuals will not be released.
