RCMP arrests two following thefts from oil and gas sites

Apr 7, 2021 | 3:13 PM

Two Grande Prairie men have been arrested by the RCMP’s Western Alberta District Crime Reduction Unity (CRU) following an investigation into an increase in thefts from oil and gas sites in the Grande Prairie area.

On April 2, two suspects were identified after RCMP members saw an offence committed at two oilfield sites northwest of Grande Prairie.

A traffic stop was initiated after the suspects left the oilfield site. A brief attempt by those suspects was made to flee but they were taken into custody without further incident.

Mounties were able to locate freshly cut copper wire in their possession and an inspection of the sites revealed the suspects caused a significant amount of damage.

RCMP have charged 53-year-old Lloyd Hagedorn and 29-year-old Robert Yates both from Grande Prairie with the following:

  • Mischief over $5000.
  • Theft under $5000.
  • Flight from police.
  • Possession of break-in instruments.

Both men are also facing additional charges under the new Provincial Critical Infrastructure Defence Act.

Bates and Hagedorn are scheduled to appear in Grande Prairie Provincial Court on April 21
