COVID-19 in Schools

Spring break extended at Valhalla Community School due to COVID-19 cases

Spring break for students at Valhalla Community School has been extended due to recent cases of COVID-19 identified at the school, but the students won’t be missing out on any learning this year.

Two cases have been identified at the school, one just before spring break started and another the following week. Alberta Health Services has identified close contacts, and all the individuals involved are being tested and isolating.

Due to these new cases, spring break has been extended to Friday, April 16. In-person classes will resume for Grades K-9 on Monday, April 19.

Superintendent Darwin Eckstrom says when students do return to school, they will be in class a little longer than usual.

“We decided that what we’re going to do is makeup time by increasing our school days. We spoke with Alberta Education, so we’re going to make up the difference of time that they’re missing this week, rather than try to do at-home-learning because that’s very difficult at the best of times.”

He adds staff and students had left their work materials in the building over spring break, and they didn’t want to risk anyone else entering the school and becoming infected.

Eckstrom adds the extended days won’t have much impact on the students. The lunch break recess will be shortened by a few minutes and the school day will be extended by 15 minutes.

The extended days will likely last through the rest of the school year.

Eckstrom says parents and families of the approximately 90 students that attend the Kindergarten to Grade 9 school have been notified of the COVID cases and of the change of schedule.
