County looking to add second left turn lane off 84 Ave onto Highway 2

One of Clairmont’s busier intersections could see some improvements in the near future.

County of Grande Prairie council has approved funding construction to add a second left-turn lane at 84 Avenue to turn south onto Highway 2.

Reeve Leanne Beaupre says this is something residents and council alike have wanted for quite some time at the crossroads of the growing hamlet.

“We felt that it was under-functioning, so we approached Alberta Transportation,” said Beaupre. “They had approved us going out and at least coming back with some costing to find out what a consultant would say about whether it could function as two lanes turning from the east and going south.”

With the cost estimated at $217,500, council approved the funding while moving the application forward to Alberta Transportation for approval.

Beaupre says the intersection sees a plethora of different traffic flows throughout the day, with many drivers heading into town alongside larger trucks coming and going from the industrial areas of the hamlet.

She adds the addition of a second turning lane option could really help improve some of the congestion from the east side of the highway, especially during peak travel times.

“This way, we’ll have two lanes: one dedicated (and) one will be an additional turning lane, but you could also go straight through, going west,” said Beaupre. “It just provides more options to move more traffic in a timely manner.”

Beaupre says she can’t pinpoint a timeline of when Alberta Transportation might come to their final decision on approval but says council will be eager to get shovels in the ground should they get approved.

“As soon as we hear back from Alberta Transportation it will come back to council, and council will make that final determination,” said Beaupre. “But it has been a priority for council, so I foresee that once it’s approved, it will move forward fairly quickly.”
