Reverse Dignity Drive

Rotary, Rotaract Clubs seeking socks, underwear donations as part of Dignity Drive

Apr 15, 2021 | 12:00 PM

The four Rotary Clubs and Rotaract Club of Grande Prairie are holding reverse Dignity Drives at Centre 2000 on April 17 and 30, and they are putting a call to the community to donate new packages of socks and underwear to go to those in need.

Heather Jones with the Community Dignity Drive Committee says items like socks and underwear are some of the most in need but are often overlooked when people donate things like clothing.

“And that’s mostly because you’re donating clothes from your closet, your shirts and your old pants,” said Jones. “Then when you are out shopping, you get items for the food bank bin.

“But we never think socks and underwear.”

The first of the two drives will go from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Centre 2000 this coming Saturday, where those donating can drive through the parking lot, pop their trunk and volunteers will take the donations.

A second drive will go at the same time and place on April 30.

Jones adds socks and underwear are items that are often taken for granted by many, but can mean a lot to someone in need.

“And how essential they really are for our comfort and health, our hygiene and giving us a sense of dignity and value when we have clean socks and underwear.”

Those who cannot make it to either of the two drives this month but would like to donate can head to either Keddie’s, the Best Western Hotel or Costco, where donation bins have been set up through the rest of April.

All donations will be distributed to the Grande Prairie Friendship Centre, Canadian Mental Health Association-Alberta Northwest Region, Northreach Society, Saint Lawrence Centre, and Rotary House.
