Drive-in movie night organized April 23 & 24 to honour local volunteers

In honour of National Volunteer Week, the City of Grande Prairie, County of Grande Prairie, MD of Greenview, and Family and Community Support Services departments are hosting free drive-in movie nights for volunteers next weekend.

It will take place on April 23 & 24 and according to Kathleen Turner with the County of Grande Prairie FCS, it is the perfect way to honour volunteers who have helped our community thrive over the last year.

“Typically to honour our volunteers we do something like luncheons, or pancake breakfasts, but that’s not going to happen this year given all the restrictions we have.”

“So, we’re looking at how we can still honour volunteers and do it in a safe way. The idea of a drive-in movie came up and we sort of just ran with that and so far, it is going very well.”

The movie being shown on Friday night will be Hotel For Dogs. Instant Family will run on Saturday. Each movie will start at 9:30 p.m. at the Grande Sunset Theatre.

Volunteers will have to download free tickets prior to attending the movie and there is limited capacity for attendance.

“We wanted to go with family-oriented movies, so they can bring their family out and watch the movie together,” explained Turner.

Volunteers are encouraged to bring snacks for themselves, there will also be a food truck on site.

Those in attendance must watch the film from their vehicle and can only leave their vehicle to purchase food or to use the washroom.

Everyone putting on this event says they are thankful for volunteers’ work throughout the year and their continued efforts to make communities in the region a better place to live.
