La Glace firefighters to participate in Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge

Apr 20, 2021 | 1:38 PM

A team of firefighters from the La Glace Fire Hall will be participating in the 2021 Firefighter Stairclimb Challenge.

The six-member squad will climb 1,204 stairs in full gear with the hope of raising money for cancer research.

In a normal year, the event would take place inside The Bow building in Calgary, but because of COVID-19 concerns, the event has been moved to take place virtually.

Nicky Hemingson, one of the firefighters with the team in La Glace says her team is motivated for the climb.

“We’re committed to raising $250 per team member,” explained Hemingson. “I don’t know about everybody else, but I’ve found it hard to get your butt in gear to do anything (during COVID), so this gave us something we can all work towards.”

“I really like the cause and thought it would be a really good idea for team building with our crew.”

Firefighters across the province participate in this event. So far, over $70,000 has been raised for the fundraiser.

Because of the COVID-19 restrictions not allowing for the climb to be done in Calgary, Hemingson and her team will be completing the climb at Gordon Badger Stadium at Evergreen Park.

She says her team is ready for what will be a difficult climb.

“The fastest I’ve done it in is 22 minutes, but that’s not with full gear. Full gear is about an additional 60 pounds and it’s really hot because it doesn’t breathe very well. I’m not sure how many more minutes that will add.”

Nicky’s dog Casey will also be participating in the climb with the team.

Casey is a year and a half old Dalmatian that is currently training to be a Crisis Response Dog. According to Hemingson, the climb will be used to help train Casey and also be used as a way for the dog to burn energy.
