Third Peace Region Division

HFCRD opts out of piloting draft K-6 curriculum

A third Peace Region school division has decided not to pilot the new draft Grade K-6 curriculum next school year, as the Holy Family Catholic Regional Division has opted out.

In a release issued Friday, the Peace River area catholic school division says after carefully reviewing the material, and taking feedback from school board trustees and the Alberta Teachers’ Association, they would have liked to have seen more teachers involved in the development of the curriculum.

Division officials add they recommend working teacher groups be created to give teachers the opportunity to provide their input.

“This decision was made after very careful consideration. All Trustees spent a lot of time in discernment and reflection before making a final decision. Our priority will always be to do what we feel is best for students,” said Board Chair Kelly Whalen.

“Although we will not be participating in the pilot for the new draft curriculum, we would welcome the opportunity to have our teachers work collaboratively to continue to develop the curriculum.”

The division joins the Peace River School Division (PRSD) and the Conseil scolaire du Nord-Ouest (CSNO) as the other Peace Region school divisions to opt out of the pilot program.

No official decision has been made by the school divisions in the Grande Prairie area, including Grande Prairie Public, Grande Prairie and District Catholic Schools and the Peace Wapiti Public School Division.

HFCRD encourages parents within its division to review the draft curriculum and provide feedback on it to Alberta Education.

The pilot of the draft curriculum from Grades K-6 will happen in the 2021-22 school year, with the finalized version set to be rolled out across the province the following year.
