ASIRT investigating after Grande Prairie RCMP vehicle collides with man on bicycle

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) has been called in to investigate after a 28-year-old man has been sent to hospital with serious injuries after a collision with an RCMP car while on his bicycle early Saturday morning in Grande Prairie.

Police say they were conducting an investigation in the area of 100 Street and 110 Avenue at around 3:30 a.m. on April 24, when the marked RCMP vehicle, which was coming in to assist with the investigation say authorities, collided with the man on the bike near 107 Avenue and 98 Street.

RCMP say they provided first aid to the man until EMS could arrive, where he was taken to hospital with serious injuries and is said to be in stable condition.

The Director of Law Enforcement has been notified and has requested ASIRT to investigate the circumstances surrounding the collision.

“The RCMP believes in processes that seek the facts. It’s important that processes taken to assess the actions of all those involved, including the police, are fair, transparent, and defendable,” say the Grande Prairie RCMP, in a release.

Grande Prairie RCMP’s General Investigative Section will continue with the original investigation, and the investigation into the actions of the man prior to the collision. RCMP did not give further details on that investigation.

They add outside of ASIRT’s investigation, the RCMP’s own internal review process will be used to look over the incident. RCMP training, policy, police response, and the member’s duty status will be subject to review, they add.
