Youth Advisory Council to host documentary screening in support of mental health

Apr 26, 2021 | 5:50 PM

As part of Youth Week 2021, the City of Grande Prairie’s Youth Advisory Council will be hosting a virtual screening of the documentary Connecting the Dots on May 5.

The purpose of the documentary is meant to feature a raw and intimate look at youth mental health from a global perspective.

The film will showcase youth voices breaking barriers around youth mental health.

“We are really hoping we can get the community to show up (for this event),” explained Keiran Nicholson, the Youth Advisory Council Chair. “You can go to the City of Grande Prairie’s website to register for it and the event is totally free.”

Nicholson says the virtual evening won’t just feature the documentary, but will also include a panel discussion with high-ranking local health officials to help further the mental health discussion.

“That (panel discussion) will have our local experts to give a more local experience to it. That is the John Howard Society, Sunrise House and Alberta Health Services, they are all our partners for this.”

Nicholson also mentioned the panel will provide a great opportunity to ask the local experts some questions to help further the discussion on the importance for mental health.

As part of Youth Week, the Grande Prairie Youth Engagement Awards are also being handed out on May 7.

Nicholson tells EverythingGP they’ve had some trouble getting people to nominate community members for the awards.

The awards are presented annually to businesses, schools and community agencies that illustrate the valuable role community plays in positive youth development in Grande Prairie.
