RCMP Collision

Cyclist injured during attempted flight from police in Grande Prairie: ASIRT

Apr 27, 2021 | 11:02 AM

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team (ASIRT) is investigating the collision between an RCMP vehicle and cyclist early Saturday morning, and have so far determined the man was fleeing police at the time of the incident.

ASIRT says on Saturday, April 24, at around 3:10 a.m., the Grande Prairie RCMP received information about two suspicions men in the area of 108 Avenue and 99 Street. Officers responded to the scene and located two men on bicycles, one of whom was towing a metal dolly with a large square safe strapped to it.

They say the man in possession of the safe, which was later determined to be stolen, was detained, but the second man fled on his bicycle towards 107 Avenue.

A second marked police vehicle located the fleeing man on 107 Avenue, and when the police’s emergency equipment was activated, the cyclist left the road and traveled across the lawn of a residential property.

It was then at approximately 3:22 a.m. the police vehicle collided with the man on the bicycle on the residential property, causing him to sustain serious injuries.

Emergency Medical Services were called and the RCMP officers administered first aid until EMS arrived on the scene.

The 28-year old man was taken to hospital where he remains in stable condition.

ASIRT is continuing to investigate the incident and determine whether the actions of the police were lawful.

Grande Prairie RCMP continues to investigate the individual and his actions prior to the collision.
