Grande Prairie adds 61 new COVID-19 cases, Alberta records 2,048

The City of Grande Prairie recorded 61 new cases of COVID-19 and 31 recoveries for Wednesday, April 28. That brings the active case total in the Swan City up by 30 to 457.

This comes as Alberta issued new targeted COVID-19 public health measures in “hot spots” with tighter restrictions that include at-home learning for junior and senior high school students and a ban on indoor fitness and sports.

The City of Grande Prairie is considered a hot spot, and will fall under these new measures for at least the next two weeks.

The County of Grande Prairie saw 17 new cases along with 17 recoveries for Wednesday, keeping the active case total in the County at 194.

Across Alberta, there was a single-day record of 2,048 new cases identified following the completion of 20,582 tests. Those tests had a 10 per cent positivity rate.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day April 28 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 3,207 cases (457 active, 2,725 recovered, 25 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 1,119 cases (194 active, 921 recovered, four deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 512 cases (22 active, 486 recovered, four deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 19 cases (three active, 16 recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 74 cases (12 active, 62 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 25 cases (two active, 23 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 137 cases (five active, 122 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 655 cases (87 active, 556 recovered, 12 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 310 cases (34 active, 276 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 579 cases (47 active, 532 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 101 cases (11 active, 89 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 133 cases (10 active, 122 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 302 cases (35 active, 266 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 114 cases (five active, 109 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 1,510 cases (129 active, 1,360 recovered, 21 deaths)

There were 632 Albertans in hospital for COVID-19 as of Wednesday night, a decrease of 11 over the last 24 hours. Of those, 151 patients are in intensive care, up six from the day prior. Those 151 Albertans being in an ICU is a pandemic high for Alberta.

In the North Zone, 69 people are in hospital (up one), 17 of whom are in intensive care (up six).

There were three new deaths reported to Alberta Health from across the province over the last 24 hours. There have now been 2,075 deaths recorded in Alberta due to COVID-19 complications.

As of Wednesday, 1,528,569 doses of vaccine have been administered in the province, with 31,313 of those doses being administered on Wednesday.

292,765 people have received two doses of the vaccine, meaning they are fully immunized.

Approximately 27.6 per cent of Albertans have received at least one dose of vaccine.
