Grande Prairie RCMP warn public of Bitcoin scams

Grande Prairie RCMP are warning of new scams circulating in the community that involves cryptocurrency.

Mounties say the scams involve someone contacting potential victims by email or phone. The scammers use various covers and stories, some of which are saying its to help police and banks catch other committing bank fraud, cheque cashing scams, or bogus investment schemes.

The people targeted are asked to send bitcoin to the scammers

Police say people should always be cautious when asked to send money.

They recommend verifying the phone number or email address used, checking documents carefully, not to feel pressured, never use the phone number or email address used in a suspicious message, and remember that reputable organizations never ask for personal information by email or text.

Police say some people have lost what they call large sums of money.

People who think they may have been taken in are asked to contact the RCMP.
