Two Weeks Minimum

City of Grande Prairie closes indoor recreational facilities under new health measures

Apr 30, 2021 | 12:06 PM

Following the announcement of new public health measures, the City of Grande Prairie will be closing its recreational facilities for all indoor bookings for a minimum of two weeks.

This includes the Leisure Centre, Dave Barr Community Centre and Revolution Place, as well as the Eastlink Centre and Coca-Cola Centre (Community Knowledge Campus).

Cancellations include those for school and academy bookings, recreation programming and user group bookings. All swimming lessons, personal training and one-on-one training sessions are also cancelled.

Outdoor fitness classes will continue to operate, says the city, and they are encouraging residents to utilize outdoor spaces such as the walking trails and parks throughout the city.

Premier Jason Kenney announced Thursday that junior and senior high school classes in COVID-19 “hot spots” in Alberta, including the City of Grande Prairie, will be moving online starting Monday in an attempt to try to curb the rise in COVID-19 cases across the province.

All indoor fitness and sports activities are banned in Grande Prairie and other hot spots for at least the next two weeks as part of these new targeted public health measures.

Municipalities in Alberta are considered hot spots when there are 365 or more active cases per 100,000 people, with a floor of 250 active cases.
