Grande Prairie records 26th COVID-19 death, 40 new cases

The City of Grande Prairie has recorded its 26th death as a result of COVID-19.

The death was one of two reported to Alberta Health in the North Zone over the last 24 hours.

The deaths in the North Zone were reported in Grande Prairie and Mackenzie County

One of the deaths was recorded on April 5 and was a male in his 30’s. The male in his 30’s had no comorbidities. The other death in the North Zone was a male in his 90’s. That case did include comorbidities and was reported on April 28.

Alberta Health did not clarify where each death occurred. There were seven deaths reported to Alberta Health on Friday, bringing the province’s COVID-19 death toll to 2,082.

In the City of Grande Prairie, there were 40 new cases of COVID-19 and 61 recoveries for Thursday, April 29, bringing the active case total in the City down to 435.

The County of Grande Prairie saw 25 new cases along with 31 recoveries for Thursday. There are 188 active cases in the County.

Across Alberta, there was a single-day record of 2,007 new cases identified following the completion of 18,955 tests. Those tests had a 10.6 per cent positivity rate.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day April 29 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 3,247 cases (435 active, 2,786 recovered, 26 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 1,144 cases (188 active, 952 recovered, four deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 512 cases (20 active, 488 recovered, four deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 19 cases (three active, 16 recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 75 cases (11 active, 64 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 25 cases (two active, 23 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 139 cases (seven active, 122 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 661 cases (92 active, 557 recovered, 12 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 312 cases (33 active, 279 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 592 cases (56 active, 536 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 103 cases (nine active, 93 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 133 cases (seven active, 125 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 304 cases (34 active, 269 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 114 cases (four active, 110 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 1,548 cases (156 active, 1,370 recovered, 22 deaths)

There were 649 Albertans in hospital for COVID-19 as of Thursday night, an increase of 17 over the last 24 hours. Of those, 152 patients are in intensive care, up one from the day prior.

In the North Zone, 80 people are in hospital (up 11), 16 of whom are in intensive care (down one).

There were seven new deaths reported to Alberta Health from across the province over the last 24 hours. There have now been 2,082 deaths recorded in Alberta due to COVID-19 complications.

As of Thursday, 1,562,713 doses of vaccine have been administered in the province, with 34,414 of those doses being administered on Thursday.

296,290 people have received two doses of the vaccine, meaning they are fully immunized.

Approximately 27.6 per cent of Albertans have received at least one dose of vaccine.
