Not the time to be piloting a new curriculum says PWPSD Superintendent

May 3, 2021 | 5:30 AM

The Superintendent of the Peace Wapiti Public School Division says a lot of concerns administration had with the province’s draft curriculum were the same as in other districts.

The Division’s board has decided Peace Wapiti will not try out the new curriculum in the upcoming school year.

Bob Stewart says the board left it up to administration to decide whether to go ahead with the pilot project.

“Operationally, we definitely had some concerns with the draft curriculum, similar to what others would have already said.”

He adds there are some parts of the new curriculum that he describes as “quite solid.”

“I also heard some criticism about the curriculum not being safe for students and I would argue that a little bit because I’m quite confident our staff would ensure any implementation was done correctly and outcomes would be delivered not only appropriately, but grade-level appropriately”

Stewart says the larger issue with this is “timing for our staff.”

“Even if this was a well-received curriculum, in my opinion now is not the time to be piloting. I feel that we’re engaged in one of the most challenging years in education in recent history and expecting staff to come off of this year and be expected to learn and to deliver something this big right now is simply not in their best interest.”

Stewart is encouraging others to study the curriculum on their own and send in their input. The province has set up an online survey.
