Fire advisory in place for Grande Prairie Forest Area

May 4, 2021 | 5:19 PM

The Grande Prairie Forest Area has been placed under a fire advisory due to dry conditions and high winds in the area.

Under the advisory, existing fire permits are still valid, but new permits will only be issued on a case-by-case basis for essential burning purposes.

Burning without a permit, except for campfires, is prohibited.

Twenty-four wildfires have been detected in the Grande Prairie Forest Area since March 1. They have burned 52.5 hectares. All but two have been extinguished, with one classified as under control and one having been turned over to the responsible party.

Fire advisories have also been issued for the Whitecourt and Edson Forest Areas. Birch Hills County, Saddle Hills County, the MD of Peace, the MD of Fairview and the Town of Fairview have also issued fire advisories.
