County of Grande Prairie records fifth death from COVID-19

The fifth death caused from COVID-19 complications has been recorded in the County of Grande Prairie.

The death was one of three reported to Alberta Health over the last 24 hours, all of which occurred in the North Zone. One was a man in his 20’s that died on March 13, who had no known comorbidities. The others occurred on May 3 and were a man in his 40’s and a female in her 30’s, both of whom had comorbidities. Due to patient confidentiality, Alberta Health will not specify which municipality these fatalities occurred in.

“We cannot provide more detailed information to protect patient confidentiality,” said Alberta Health spokesperson Tom McMillan to EverythingGP.

As per Alberta Health, there can be a delay in a death being reported due to the fatality being confirmed post-mortem as having COVID-19 as a contributing cause.

There have now been 2,102 deaths recorded in Alberta due to COVID-19 complications, 161 of which have occurred in northern Alberta.

Meantime, the City of Grande Prairie recorded 18 new cases of COVID-19 and 44 recoveries for Tuesday, May 4, bringing the active case total in the City down by 26 to 452.

The County of Grande Prairie also added 13 new cases along with 16 recoveries for Tuesday. There are 187 active cases in the County.

Across Alberta, there were 2,271 new cases identified following the completion of 20,494 tests. Those tests had an 11.1 per cent positivity rate.

Updated case totals among Peace Region municipalities as of the end of day May 4 are as follows:

  • City of Grande Prairie: 3,433 cases (452 active, 2,955 recovered, 26 deaths)
  • County of Grande Prairie: 1,215 cases (187 active, 1,023 recovered, five deaths)
  • M.D. of Greenview: 524 cases (22 active, 498 recovered, four deaths)
  • Birch Hills County: 20 cases (two active, 18 recovered)
  • M.D. of Spirit River: 78 cases (seven active, 71 recovered)
  • Saddle Hills County: 25 cases (one active, 24 recovered)
  • M.D. of Smoky River: 144 cases (10 active, 124 recovered, 10 deaths)
  • Big Lakes County: 694 cases (84 active, 604 recovered, 12 deaths)
  • M.D. of Lesser Slave River: 334 cases (42 active, 292 recovered)
  • M.D. of Peace: 637 cases (87 active, 550 recovered)
  • M.D. of Fairview: 113 cases (15 active, 97 recovered, one death)
  • Clear Hills County: 133 cases (132 recovered, one death)
  • Northern Sunrise County: 306 cases (20 active, 285 recovered, one death)
  • County of Northern Lights: 119 cases (six active, 113 recovered)
  • Mackenzie County: 1,619 cases (166 active, 1,430 recovered, 23 deaths)

As of Tuesday night there were 666 Albertans in hospital for COVID-19, a decrease of five over the last 24 hours. Of those, 146 patients are in intensive care, down four from the day prior.

In the North Zone, 88 people are in hospital (down five), 17 of whom are in intensive care (up one).

As of Tuesday, 1,694,675 doses of vaccine have been administered in the province, with 26,200 of those doses being administered on May 4.

305,511 people have received two doses of the vaccine, meaning they are fully immunized.

Approximately 31.3 per cent of Albertans have received at least one dose of vaccine.
