County residents asked to avoid unneeded burning as fire threat rises

May 5, 2021 | 5:33 PM

The County of Grande Prairie Regional Fire Service is recommending that residents avoid burning following multiple fires caused by risky burning practices over the last week.

Conditions in the Grande Prairie Forest Protection Area have led Alberta Wildfire to issue a fire advisory.

“We are simply asking the public to be aware of the dangerous fire conditions and only burn if you have to, or in approved pits while following all the conditions of a permit,” said Fire Chief Dan Verdun.

Burning of any kind is banned when winds are gusting at 12 kilometers per hour or higher.

Despite rainfall in the area over the last week, the fire service also wants to remind residents current weather can dry to dangerous conditions in a matter of hours.
