Two Peace Region products are part of Volleyball Canada’s NextGen women’s national team.

Natasha Calkins of Grande Prairie is one of 19 players named to the team. The 24-year-old played high school volleyball in Calgary and at the university level at Florida State. Calkins plays professionally in Sweden.

Beaverlodge’s Gina Schmidt is the team’s head coach.

“The NextGen program is a gateway for the Senior National Team and is an extremely important part of the Women’s National Team framework,” says Schmidt in a news release from Volleyball Canada. “I am very excited to have the opportunity to work with this talented group of athletes we have selected to this year’s team.”

Schmidt is also a former national team player.

The NextGen players will be at the National Training Centre in Richmond, BC May 24 through July 30 for a 10-week training session.

Volleyball Canada announced in late April that another Beaverlodge product, Dani Smith, would be with the national team for the Volleyball Nations League to be played in a bubble in Italy starting later this month.
