Peace Region man embarking on 200-mile journey in support of Odyssey House

May 10, 2021 | 1:40 PM

A Peace Region man is planning on running 200 miles in 120 hours this July, all with the goal of raising money to support the Odyssey House in Grande Prairie.

Phil Troyer tells EverythingGP his plan is to begin the 200-mile journey on July 14 and run the famous Canadian Death Race track in Grande Cache twice, as well as some other trails in the area.

Troyer previously competed in the death race in 2018 and 2019. The Canadian Death Race is 125 kilometers long and goes up over three mountain summits.

Troyer says he is excited for this challenge.

“My goal was to run a 200-mile race. I’ve done a 100-mile race before, but there are very few 200-mile races in Canada and there’s none in western Canada. I just decided I would do my own thing and try to find my own course to run.”

According to Troyer, finding a route to safely run was difficult.

“That was a big challenge because it’s really hard to find 200-miles of trail,” joked Troyer.

As for why he is choosing to support Odyssey House, he says the organization is close to his heart and does great things for the surrounding community.

Odyssey House provides safe, secure, and supportive housing for women and their children who are victims of domestic violence, are in crisis, or in need of a housing alternative.

“I’ve been a supporter of Odyssey House for quite a while, and I love what they do. My wife is a teacher at one of the schools that gets a lot of the kids from Odyssey House, so we see the need for them.”

By running to support Odyssey House, he adds that it gives him extra motivation to complete the race.

Troyer’s goal is to raise $10,000 for Odyssey House by the time he completes the race.

In order to fundraise $10,000, he is looking for local organizations to sponsor him.

“I’m looking for sponsors for each leg of the race,” said Troyer. “The race has 14 different legs ranging from 10 kilometers to 54 kilometers. As a sponsor of the leg, you’d make a $500 donation and that goes into a special account for Odyssey House.”

Anyone interested in becoming a sponsor for Troyer’s race is asked to email him at philsfunrun@gmail.com.
