Catalytic converter theft in Fox Creek prompts RCMP to offer prevention tips

May 11, 2021 | 4:45 PM

RCMP in Fox Creek are offering up some tips to protect residents’ vehicles from thieves, as they are investigating a recent report of catalytic converters being stolen off two trucks in a construction site in town.

Police were notified of the theft on Monday in the area of 120 Street and 1 Avenue, saying the thefts happened sometime the previous night.

Fox Creek RCMP says they recognize catalytic converter theft is a concerning crime trend and want residents to do their best to protect their vehicles from these thieves.

“Crime Prevention Through Environmental Design is a key factor in reducing theft of catalytic converters,” said Cpl. James Deibert, Detachment Commander in Fox Creek.

“Think about where you park your vehicle. Think about how the criminal would gain access to it, if there’s any way to prevent access or add a barrier, that’s what we recommend.”

He adds these crimes are typically crimes of opportunity, and by taking steps like parking in well-lit areas close to building entrances, parking in a garage, and securing vehicles behind locked fences if possible are good tips to remember to protect a vehicle.

Diebert also says engraving the vehicle’s identification number (VIN) on the catalytic converter is a good measure, as this may alert a scrap metal dealer that it was stolen along with making it easier to identify the owner.

Anyone with information on this theft or any other incidents are asked come forward to the Fox Creek RCMP at 780-622-3740 or their local police.

Anonymous tips can be submitted to Crime Stoppers.
