Seeding progress in the Peace ahead of past year averages

The May 11 crop report from Alberta Agriculture says 17.2 per cent of the Peace Region crop had been seeded as of that date.

That is ahead of the five-year average of 13.8 per cent and the 10-year average of 12.2.

Seeding progress at the same time last year stood at 7.2 per cent. Farmers were still trying to finish combining the 2019 crop while also trying to seed the 2020 one.

The percentage completions by crop are 22.5 for peas, 19.9 for wheat, 15.4 for canola, 11.9 for barley, and 9.4 for oats.

The report also says 79 per cent of the surface and sub-surface moisture is rated good to excellent. There are reports of wet fields in the far north end of the Peace.
