Sun, warm temperatures in the long weekend forecast for Grande Prairie area

May 20, 2021 | 2:55 PM

Environment Canada says the Grande Prairie area is slated for plenty of sun and warm temperatures this May long weekend.

Meteorologist Janelle Gergely says those heading outdoors will see mostly sunny skies through Sunday with the mercury gradually rising.

“We can see on Friday we’re seeing (a high of) 18, and just warmer temperatures into Saturday and into Sunday,” said Gurgely. “Twenty-three in the forecast for Saturday and Sunday.”

This comes after a daily record 30.5 mm of rain fell on Tuesday in the Swan City, adding to the nearly 10 mm that fell on Monday.

Gurgely suggests the area got it’s long weekend precipitation out of the way ahead of time, as the weather office is not seeing any until possibly the back end of the holiday Monday.

“We are looking at a system possibly developing on Monday into Tuesday. But even that’s not a slam dunk at this point.”

On top of that, Gergely says the Peace Region may actually be the envy of the province, as other areas will be quite a bit cooler.

“Grande Prairie is going to see some beautiful weather, where as areas to the south are going to see some really cold temperatures,” said Gurgely. “There’s areas… kind of in the Medicine Hat region, they’ll be quite cold this weekend. Maybe highs of five (degrees).”

Those looking to head out camping this weekend can check availability on the latest campground report under the ‘What’s Happening?’ tab on EverythingGP.

A reminder that public health restrictions remain in place, including a ban on indoor social gatherings while outdoor gatherings in the City and County of Grande Prairie and MD of Greenview are limited to a maximum of five people.
