A Grande Prairie man has been charged with firearms offences after authorities say he was found armed after trespassing onto the CN rail yard on the city’s south end Tuesday.

At around 10:45 a.m. Grande Prairie RCMP say they responded to a complaint of th man trespassing. As they arrived, an officer saw the suspect pick up a firearm and flee into the wooded area between 68 and 76 Avenue.

Additional support was called in to set up containment, while police say area businesses were advised to secure themselves inside.

Authorities say Police Dog Services tracked the man down a short time later at an encampment. He was then arrested and taken into custody. Police add they seized a loaded sawed-off shotgun at the encampment.
