Court update: Trial dates set in manslaughter case, preliminary hearing dates set in Peace River murder case, jail time for ATM thefts

May 27, 2021 | 5:30 AM

Alberta Justice says trial dates have been set in a Grande Prairie manslaughter case.

The trial for Telford Randall Howe is set for May 9 to 17, 2022.

He was charged after the April 2020 death of 32-year-old Trevor Guillen.

RCMP said at the time that on April 25 last year, Mounties were called out the area of 102 Street and 106 Avenue. They found a man with life-threatening injuries. He later died in hospital.

Police did not reveal how Guillen had been injured.

Preliminary hearing dates in Peace River murder case

Alberta Justice says preliminary hearing dates have been set in a Peace River murder case.

The hearing for Matthew Ian Blachford is set for February 22 to 25, 2022.

He was charged in January 2020 after the October 8, 2019 death of 37-year-old Jennifer Donovan in Peace River.

RCMP said at the time they were called out to an incident on 98 Street and 77 Avenue in Peace River just before 2 a.m. that day but did not give any further information about what happened. Donovan was found dead at the scene.

Fine after incident where police vehicles hit

A Valleyview woman charged after an incident last year in Grande Prairie where a vehicle took off from police, and later drove into police vehicles, has been given a fine.

Becki Mustus was given a $500 on a charge of obstructing a peace officer May 5 in Grande Prairie court. All other charges were withdrawn.

Mounties said at the time that around 4 a.m. on April 29, 2020, they spotted a suspicious vehicle on the north side of Grande Prairie. It took off when police tried to pull it over.

Police add it then went into the Mountview area and RCMP tried to corner it in a cul-de-sac. The suspect vehicle dove into some police vehicles while trying to get away. Mounties added there was a lot of damage to nearby vehicles and property.

Trial in Grande Prairie drug case

Trial dates have been set for two people charged in a Grande Prairie drug arrest.

Alberta Justice says the trial for Leonard Huyghebaert and Carole Gaudet will take place January 25, 2022.

They were charged after a search of a downtown Grande Prairie home on December 16, 2020.

RCMP said at the time that cocaine, crystal meth, LSD, a loaded .22, ammunition, cash, and tv projector that had been stolen from the QE II hospital were all recovered during that search.

The charges laid at the time included possession for the purpose of trafficking, possession of a weapon dangerous to the public, and possession of property obtained by crime.

Jail time for man charged after ATM thefts

Alberta Justice says a man charged after what police described as a string of ATM thefts has been given jail time.

Darwyn Ronald Beaudry was given a 22-month jail term in Stony Plain court May 4 after pleading guilty to charges of conspiracy, theft over $5000, and two charges of shop breaking with intent. He will be given eight months credit for time already spent in custody.

Police said they arrested Beaudry near Gunn on December 1 last year after investigating ATM thefts around Alberta for a year.

Beaudry was also given a consecutive six-month jail sentence after admitting to a shop breaking with intent charge and another consecutive six months on a charge of possession of stolen property related to an ATM theft in Slave Lake.

That happened at a gas station on March 20, 2020. Beaudry also admitted to possession of a controlled substance, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and unauthorized possession of a firearm counts.

Three other people were also charged in that Slave Lake theft. Corey Paul Beaudry was due in Slave Lake court May 26. A preliminary hearing for Brittany Eva Boyko and Jamie Lee Brown is set for December 1, also in Slave Lake court.
